Our hotel reception recommended this restaurant for typical Croatian food.,and we are glad ....Delicious! Our waiter suggested “Sarma” cabbage rolls done in sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.,so good we went back next night and had their version of Goulash soup., also very good! Excellent service and central location.

We visited the restaurant on 7th December. Two of us had the mixed meat stew. It is possible that our tastes are different to the locals but we found the meat to be fatty, gristly and chewy. I has something described on the menu as fritters with a mushroom sauce and I'm not sure what was under the mushroom sauce but I couldn't cut it with a knife. My friend had tuna and that was fine. The restaurant was averagely busy with locals I think so it may be that the food wasn't to our taste but I wouldn't recommend it.

Our local guide suggested us to have a dinner in this restaurant in order to taste typical Croatian food. We recommend it due to the courtesy of the staff and also for the quality of the food. Prices are ok.

  • Dec 03, 2018 by Freddie B Isreal

Nicer restaurant, and the service was overall good.

The price are overall more on the reasonable side for the area. If you're American, British or any other place similar country the price will be acceptable for what u order.

The Sarma which is a Croatian dish is quite tasty. It's cabbage with minced meat inside with potatoes. Pretty cheap and a hearty meal.

The second dish I got was the veal with ham and cheese inside. That was uninspiring. Pommes frites/French fries that came with it were tasty tho.

The bread they set on the table at the beginning, you have to pay for. So if you don't want that charge don't touch it or better yet, tell them to send it back.

Made a reservation and were glad we did. This is a popular spot for locals - serves Croatian cuisine. Servers were wonderful and helpful in explaining the choices (in English for us). If you walk away hungry it is your own fault. Everything we ordered was wonderful.

This place offer dishes that include pieces of cristal, also in the wine you can find flotating elements that neither the waiter nor the owner can explain. Once we inform of this situation to the restaurant they simply continue with their work and didn’t take this into consideration. We hardly recomend you to don’t consider this place as a safty option.

This is one of the few places in Zagreb where we eat regularly - whether stew or local dishes like pašticada or sarma, they really do have meals like Croatian grannies used to make. The waiters are friendly and discrete, they will check up on you regularly, but they won't be very pushy. I have read some of the one and two stars reviews and saw that people complained about "some bread and cheese being brought to the table, although we didn't order them". This is called cover charge and is the practice of most of the restaurants throughout Europe. So, do not be surprised when you get it. Bread is fresh and homemade and it melts in your mouth. Do make a reservation, since it is usually very busy.

Me and my girlfriend ordered the Slavonian Shepherd's stew and the peasants dish. Both were very salty and quite greasy but ok, probably because we were hungry. It was the service that was awful! We were seen by the lady at the desk, after a Dober Vecer (Good evening) from us we got nothing back she took us to a table that was it. The waiter was cold also, after a meal we waited half an hour before eventually we just asked for the bill. Their was no mention if we wanted to order coffee or a dessert. I would avoid this place in Zagreb, their are better options.

The only way you're going to get more authentic Croatian cuisine is if my mom cooked it for you, and that's not likely to happen. This is good old home-style cooking made according to what's seasonal. For instance, you won't find cabbage rolls in the summer, but you can get stuffed peppers. There were 8 of us at dinner the evening we visited and no one was disappointed.

  • Aug 31, 2018 by 2thmechandlightguru

We were excited to eat here, and it was a bit disappointing. First off, they give you bread, and some tables were given a cheese dip, that they automatically charge for. If you don't want it, refuse it before it arrives. We didn't know, and ate some bread, although it really was pretty good bread... worth the 5k they charged us. Not a big deal. Second issue is to be careful of what you order on the menu, my husband had stuffed peppers, he liked them, and it was exactly that - stuffed peppers. I ordered the beef stew, thinking I was getting stew/soup in a bowl. Nope! I got sliced beef with gravy, and dumplings (pasticada). If you want the soup/stew order the 'sheppards stew' not 'beef stew'. Ugh. Anyways, it wasn't bad, except the beef was quite fatty, and I could only eat about half of it. Portions are a good size, and sharable for sure. We probably won't return, however if I had known then what I know now, it would have likely been a better experience. Ps. Table beside us mentioned the auto charge for bread/cheese, and they literally didn't care, charged them anyway.

For vegetarians they have vegetarian burger, which is quite good. They also have all the traditional Croatian food, which I can't really comment on since it's mostly meat or fish.

The restaurant serves typical Croatian food, ethnic, old-fashioned and tasty, brings back childhood memories. Every time I'm in Zagreb (typically once a year) I use the opportunity to eat what my grandmother used to cook. There was no surprise, both food and service were excellent, even my North American-born son and his South American-born girlfriend liked it very much. However, when were were done, I could not find my wallet. My wife had to pay the bill and I went immediately to our Airbnb to look for my wallet, but it was not there. The Airbnb was in a downtown pedestrian zone with no parking - I thought maybe I lost the wallet in the parking garage 5 min away - so I went there to look for it. I could not find it, but when I asked the parking attendant if somebody found a wallet he replied: "You must be Mr. so and so, they called from Stari Fijaker" because they found your wallet. " I went back to the restaurant and found out that from the parking ticket in my wallet they could see where I parked, so they called the garage in case I went there looking for my wallet. I had several hundred dollars and similar amount in local currency, driver's license, bank card and two credit cards, but needles to say, nothing was missing. Honest people are sometimes hard to find, but clearly not in Stari Fijaker... Stari Fijaker staff, I am sorry I don't even know your names, but thank you one more time!!!

Traditional kitchen, old fashioned restaurant, nothing fancy and sometimes that’s just what you want. I had a most perfect beef stew soup, Zagreb schnitzel and tasteful sausages. Go eat here! Fortunately a laud Croatian family came to sit next to us so George Michaels careless whispers didn’t reach my ear anymore. I hate music in restaurants but if I can give an advise; choose Croatian traditional, it would fit here perfect.

It was an OK place, rather touristic but where you could try some traditional Croatian food such as the duck. I has a quite vintage ambient. The staff is ok. A but pricy and keep in mind that they bring an appetizer as a welcome but then it is included in the bill!

My family of 5 made a booking for this local restaurant and were extremely disappointed. The 2 male waitstaff showed no sense of urgency even though there was a restaurant full of people. We arrived with a bread basket and plate of cottage cheese already on our table. Our mains arrived but the 3 side dishes were omitted from the order, the waiter shrugged and apologised because it was busy. The gnocchi accompanied my beef steak and tasted awful. My beef arrived close to rare and I could only eat the seared edges. Overpriced for what we received. Not a good option for tourists to visit for a taste of Zagreb.

On our 2nd day in Zagreb we went to the Stari Fijaker 900 Restaurant for lunch. We had some local Croatian Cuisines, most of them were recommended by members of staff since there are lots of food in which have been sold out (since it was the day after the finish of the World Cup 2018). The soup was tasty and delicious, and the other foods were rather 'meaty', but still quite delicious and yummy. Service was also enjoyable and we enjoyed swift delivery of foods and drinks onto our table throughout the meal. Ambience was also great and we finished the meal in less than $500 HKD, which was definitely worth the cost for such good food and service. Overall, enjoyable and was definitely a great first Croatian Meal in this trip in Zagreb.

Through several websites recommending this place as some of the best proper Croatian food, we arrived on a Sunday evening to find a lovely setting with a pretty quiet atmosphere. The servers were very friendly and service throughout was impeccably fast. We had pasticada (beef stew and gnocchi) and shepherds stew (similar to a goulash soup, with four different meats), which were both amazing. The menu was extensive too, and had we had more time in the city we may well have come back again for more!

Recommended by my hostel receptionist and I was glad I checked it out. Has a decent selection of local Croat dishes compared to other restaurants here which serve a fair bit of Italian.

A one person lunch including a side and bread on top came to 120 kuna ($25AUD).

Service was fast and tables are well spaced out allowing for conversation without the need to scream.

Pictured below is my order of a meat loaf (beef) with gnocchi (100 kuna) and a side of veggies (20 kuna).

The bread tray contains 3 home made breads priced at around 5 kuna each.

Traditional Croatian, somewhat ordinary place for a nice dinner. Entry leads to a few steps down into bar and restaurant. Dinner of Shepherd’s Stew (frequently recommended by Trip Advisors) was meat in a paprika tomato broth and grilled pork cutlet in garlic sauce with potatoes, plus beverages, for $33 USD. Located a few blocks from main square into old city, near tram.

Four of us, three from the U.S. and one from the U.K,, dined here during World Cup. Our hotel recommended this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The house wine was excellent and the trout entree and the beans in pumpkinseed oil were outstanding. When we asked where they would recommend we watch the match after dinner, they said that we could stay and watch it there. We continued to order their excellent house wine while we and the staff (the place was empty after dinner - most of Zagreb was in the square) watched Croatia beat Russia! I highly recommend Stari Fijaker. Thanks to the wonderful staff for a memorable evening in your beautiful city!

We were recommended this place by our Airbnb host as a very authentic Croatian restuarant and we’re so glad we went. The staff was attentive and hospitable. We asked to try something traditional, noting that we weren’t very hungry so just wanted something light. Our waiter gave us delicious recommendations and even suggested we share a dish given we weren’t that hungry - we really liked how he was genuine and didn’t try to get us to spend more. The food was divine and the service was very quick.

After walking in the rain finding our way around this city, we found this eatery which is said founded 1848. Serving honest tradtional "inland" Croatia, we had stuffed pepper filled with chopped pork & meat stew of beef, pork, venison which was enough for 2. Most satisfying for the experience at reasonble prices, worth trying!

Small portions for big price, they put cheese and some bread on the table without ordering and they charge 3euro weather you eat it or not. Nowhere where someone offer to try something didn't charge for that except here. They give you a box of bread and after you finish eating they count how much you eat and then charge it. On receipt there was also some portion of potato that we didn't order. Small portions, expensive prices and not so great waiters. Deffinitely a place to avoid in Zagreb. You have so much better food without being ripped off.

I had veal Scnitzel stuffed with cheese and ham (Veal Zagrebechi) and my husband had Mixed meat platter and teenage son had the Beef with gnocchi - all 3 dishes were delicious, good servings, tasty food and excellent service with a lovely atmosphere. Good restaurant which is not too expensive but service excellent. The bread was very fresh that was brought to us with a lovely dip/spread as an appetiser while we waited for food - would definitely visit again. I will go back and have what my son ordered as the beef was so tender and gnocchi very good.

Pessimo. Personale scortese.

We were invited by friends, so I can’t comment on prices. Ask the waiter for the daily specials, as these are the best choices. My wife ate pepperoni stuffed with mince accompanied by mashed potatoes, and I ‘Slavonian Shepherds’ Stew containing four different meats(!). Both dishes were tasty and the accompanying breads were excellent, especially the greaves bread. We drank water. Service was exemplary. This is a restaurant we would visit again if we return to Zagreb.

Named after croatian for 'old carriage', this establishment is one of the best restaurants to taste traditional local cuisine in Zagreb.

The atmosphere is casual. Tables are covered in traditional croatian patterned cloth, and the decide is unassuming.

Food is very good and the prices are reasonable. This is the type of food your parents or grandparents would have used to make, if you were a local. It is very authentic home style.

    Not to be missed!

Atmosfera calda, locale ben arredato e servizio rapido e cortese.

Apesar do restaurante estar vazio (apenas 3 mesas ainda terminavam o almoço), fui maravilhosamente bem tratada e pude almoçar com toda calma do mundo. Amei minha experiência no Stari. Recomendo à todos sem quaisquer ressalvas.

Booked in advance, but the place was not very busy on a Thursday night before 7pm (got busier later). We got a platter of cheese and prosciutto with some very nice home made bread as starters, followed by a large platter of mixed meat, potatoes etc, a salad as a side order and some dessert. All in all the service was quick, they speak English pretty well too, and the price very decent. Definitely worth a visit

This place has been here for a long, long time and, as such, one would expect really good food, especially with the crowd on a Sunday afternoon. However, the dishes were bland, with the veal and 'mlinci' being somewhat undercooked, soggy and then reheated. The small breads they serve are great, but costly and at your table when you arrive.

  • Mar 18, 2018 by Ira Ban

Since I am originally from Zagreb but don’t live there, I wanted a restaurant which will give me a feeling of dinner at grandma’s. Stari Fijaker definitely is that place. Staff is extremely nice, the decor is true grandma style. Unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed with the food. Dalmatian pasticada was probably the worst Pasticada I’ve ever had. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad. And if I had never tried real pasticada, I probably would’ve loved it. The value for money is not the best either. But I can see why tourists love this place.

  • Mar 16, 2018 by Ky13L

The decor and ambiance were great which led to a lovely relaxed meal. The service was good and the food was absolutely amazing. I had the mixed grill. All the meat was perfectly cooked and juicy and tender. All for a good price too. I definitely recommend.

Great food, traditional croatian, old school service, staff & owner beyond professional. Fijaker remains one of the best down to earth places to eat in Zagreb, especially since it was here before the tourist boom and the countless other restaurants that followed in its wake.

After a long working day in Zagreb we decided to eat something in the restaurant Stari Fijaker which is a traditional restaurant iz Zagreb. They have very good choice of daily menu which is very good, based on traditional Croatian cuisine from all parts of the Republic of Croatia. You don't have to wait long time for meals because the daily menu is already cooked and served immediately, and because we were quite hungry it was very good thing!

I had a feeling that Zagreb would for most of its history never have been more than a provincial outpost, latterly of the Austro-Hungarian empire, quiet and nineteenth-century and Hapsburg. We left the old town and descended the street called Mesnička to find Stari Fijaker 900. It had been recommended in the copy of Zagreb in Your Pocket that we’d picked up at some point during the day. It was described as a beer hall. I was concerned that this might mean a dim atmosphere and having to order at the top of my voice, but although it had vaulted ceilings with brick ribs there was nothing else of the bierkeller about it; well, it had bier, but certainly wasn’t a keller. It was set out and laid up as a regular restaurant, white tablecloths and all, and the waiters wore waistcoats. At 7.00 it was barely occupied, although reserved notices on some of the tables made it clear that custom was expected; it dribbled in as we ordered and ate. The menu was heavy on meat and potatoes (there you are, you see, Mitteleuropean or what?), and I stuck with my imagined theme and ordered a Zagreb schnitzel, the old favourite of a slice of veal wrapped around ham and cheese and fried in breadcrumbs. It came with fried potatoes and was a bit dry, but my wife’s pork cutlets had plenty of savoury sauce that I could dip into. Tiring of lager in a Balkan November very soon after arriving, I stuck with black beer. It was all good solid stuff, but more belly-timber than anything very exciting.

Nothing special really. Food was average, service could be much better. A collegue refused a dish which was cold, the waitress took it back with a boring look on her face and with no apology.

  • Dec 22, 2017 by Tanya P

We showed up at 4 pm without a reservation. They were quite busy and had a group coming in, but they told us that we could have a table if 1 1/2 hours was long enough for us. It was plenty long! In our group we had the fried calamari and beef stew Dalmatia style and grilled chicken. Everything was very tasty. The service was quick, and by 5 pm we were ready to get back out to the Christmas market.

We made two visits to this excellent restaurant in Zagreb . Interiors were local Croatian , rustic, warm and colorful . Waiters were friendly and attentive during our first meal , but slow on the second . Reason was a Xmas party in an adjoining room which took all serving capacity for a while . Impressions , waiters acknowledged their shortcomings and compensated us in the final bill . So much said , food was really good on both occasions , first time tasty chicken breast and pork scnitzel , second time grilled beef steaks of outstanding quality and exceptional tenderness . Both times we ordered the local house wine , and it was really og a remarkably high quality . Like many other Croatian wines that regrettably are nor sold abroad . Additionally we enjoyed dried ham , local cheese and olives as starters , and desserts were sweet and sinful . Particularly when supported by a good slivovitz or pear raki and a strong Croatian coffee . The overall menu prices in this restaurant are very competitive , and visitten friendly ! Hence , we strongly recommend visting Fijaker when you visit Zagreb .

Problem with some of old places in Zagreb is that they are sometimes still run like a syndicate dating from communism with disinterested staff and bad attitude. This could be decent place under different management if service and attitude of waiters is different, instead of hiring some proactive and friendly staff they keep people who should not be in hospitality industry. Recently came for lunch at 1:40 PM where place was occupied with 3 tables and the rest of 80% of restaurant empty (no reservations) after they sat me at the table they made me move again to single table by the window with draft because I was single. I just walked out, this was not necessary considering they were empty , but just bad horrible attitude of waiter with attitude you are here for them and he is the emperor , there are many nice places in Zagreb where you will feel welcome and feel warm hospitality for you money. this is not one of them.

For a true Croatian experience don't miss this restaurant. Home cooked Croatian, nothing fancy but tasty and excellent service. Both times we visited this restaurant it was filled with locals, which must be a good sign. Don't expect a gourmet experience but well prepared local food at very reasonable prices. The second night we went we were not particularly hungry and I felt like a bowl of soup and my partner had a pasta dish and we were served with pleasure as if we had ordered a full meal. Friendly staff and hostess.

When I walked into Stari Fijaker, I felt like I was walking into the past - or into Grandma's. It had a very homey feel. I chose the roast veal and vegetables which was very simple and very good. My spouse chose the shepherd's stew and said it was excellent. The wine list is okay too. Great for a Sunday evening meal. The prices are reasonable.

This restaurant is the representative of Croatian cuisine in Zagreb. I had lunch here, and all meals are so good. Only one obstacle is a little late for meal to be served. But staffs are courteous, it's no problem for me.

  • Sep 23, 2017 by Pennyanne2012

We went with a group to celebrate the last night of our holiday in Zagreb. The decor was traditional with the heart shaped designs on table cloths and dark wood. However, we were given no choice of food. We were presented, as starters, with plates of tasteless substances which resembled cottage cheese but even more tasteless. The selection of bread was variable. Some had layers of what tasted like Marmite in it and was a vile disappointment. The main course was edible, just. The slices of pork and veal were well cooked and tender but had gone freezing cold by the time we were served. The sauce had coagulated and the potatoes were spongy and not crisp at all. There was one small bowl of salad between us, with only three slices of tomato to serve nine adults! Just not enough. The wines, however, were drinkable and very cheap, at eighty kuna per litre. Beer was also cheap at fifteen kuna for fifty mls. There was no choice, except red or white or beer. I think the fact that it was impossible to communicate with the staff because they never came past regularly to take orders and certainly the waiting times for the food were ridiculous means I would not return. A frustrating experience. Students wanting a cheap meal might think it was fine though.

  • Sep 16, 2017 by Eugene K

It's a shame to fault the restaurant solely for it's staff. But this was our experience. The restaurant was not packed but fairly busy when we came in. The grimace on the waiter's face as we came in, screamed "oh no, not another customer" We were asked to take a table as the waiter proceeded to clear another. Would it be too much to walk us to our table? We sat for 17 minutes until my wife got up and went to get the menu. Although we were engaged in conversation, I was already upset enough to keep track of the time. Then the waiter came to take our order. It was a simple order. He didn't write it down, which is fine. But then he came back twice to confirm. He forgot once, happens. But twice? The food came within reasonable time, we ate and asked for a bill. And he forgot again. After waiting for a while and watching the waiter walk around to check on other tables and leave to the bar area, I went up to the bar to ask for a check. The food. Salad was drenched in what we perceived to be salted water. Nothing was offered. Not bread, not olive oil and balsamic. We are tourists, may be that is the way in this place. We let that go. The rest of the food was ok though not exciting. I hope this review will prompt the owner and the staff to reflect and improve.

Sort of sums it up. We were in Zagreb for one night, our guide recommended this, and we were sorely disappointed. They were out of the veal shank we wanted (at 7pm Sat night!) and the veal medallions were tough. We got the distinct impression our server didn't like Americans. Avoid at all costs.

  • Sep 14, 2017 by Terry D

Stari Fijaker is easily located just about at the junction of two major streets, Ilica and Mesnicka in the old town. The restaurant is quirky (typical old style Zagreb according to our Airbnb host who recommended it) with small carriages hanging down from the ceiling: solid furniture with crisp linen tablecloths; some private booths - a nice atmosphere overall. Our waiter was very attentive, his English excellent, very knowledgable and helpful re local wine choices. I had The Slavonian shepherd's stew which was extremely good - a mixture of various meats including venison. Presented in a tureen and poured into a bowl at the table it was very plentiful (giving two big bowls) and truly satisfying meal. I thoroughly recommend it, very tasty and filling, the meats very tender and the gravy superb! My partner had the roast veal served with the ubiquitous (in Croatia) sauteed potatoes which was good, again filling but not outstanding. With good, plentiful bread, two glasses of red wine, a local brandy and coke the bill was 225 Kuna - very good value indeed. Highly recommended. We ate there Sept 7, 2017.

Cucina tipica e atmosfera d'epoca. I will give 3/5 yust because of "good will" - which means - brand mark and old glory. Before this restaurant was better, now is visible that they have massive production and it is becoming place for tourists. I found hair in my plate. They gave me new meal but I needed to pay. According to my experience, it should be free of charge. I will not come again.

I was in Croatia for the first time so I tried to taste the croatian food. I was totally satisfied of this restaurant, the food was very good, the service was perfect and they helped us in the choise and even the price was correct (lower than a similar restaurant in Italy). We tested some meat based dishes and at the end the tipical strukla. Very satisfied!!

We were recommended to this restaurant by the owner of our accommodation - she said she ate there regularly and stated it was more a restaurant for locals than tourists. Can't really comment on this aspect as it was welcoming, had a nice atmosphere & decor - tourists wouldn't be put off as they can be in some "local restaurants". The food was very good and the servcice excellent. The waiter spoke good English. This was our first meal in Zagreb and it re-enforced our views about value to be found in local restaurants away from the tourist strips. Unfortunately, we were only in Zagreb for a few days so didn't have the opportunity to return here, which we wanted to do.

Recommended by a local tour guide. Food fresh, hot, tasty. Portions are good size and price reasonable. Great value for the money. Our waiter spoke English. No sign on the door saying they takes credit card, but they do. Your money goes a long way here. Well worth it.

One of the better local restaurants focusing on the older style of authentic cooking. The interior has an old world charm to it and the meals are all hearty and full of flavour. Everything was obviously freshly prepared and the pricing was very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food.

"Local" South African guy we met told us this was one of his favorite spots. Food was decent, but worth the experience. I had the shepherd stew (worth trying but not necessarily amazing). Kids had basic chicken breast and fries. Wife had gnocchi with tomato sauce ( fresh homemade and very good ). Desserts were apricot and cherry strudel ( very good ). Worth the experience if that is what you are aiming for. There are much more hip and epicurean alternatives though.

We just came back from a month in Zagreb and ate at Stari Fijaker three times. Our only regret is that we hadn't gone more times. The waiter, Miro, remembered us from the the first time!! and what we had ordered. So sweet and so professional. It's delightfully furnished, great ambiance and all the waiters were lovely--with great English. We went there to have traditional Croatian food, not haute cuisine. And we got very good, fresh food, very generous portions. We always split the meal and that was fine with them; no snooty attitude. Our dinners of wine, beer, yummy down home food (venison stew, fresh salad, etc) cost about $19. WOW!!!

One of the best restaurants in Zagreb for traditional Croatian food at VERY reasonable prices (cheapest restaurant we ate in, in Zagreb). The house red wine was delicious too.

Again I went here after reading the reviews. The meal was average and the price very reasonable Can't complain that much in the UK with meals and drinks we would have to pay a lot more

I've never left a Trip Advisor review for a restaurant, so let that tell you how little I liked this place. It was recommended by a friend who lived in Zagreb, so we gave it a whirl. It was close to 10pm when we came in, and the first thing the waiter said to us was: "Kitchen closes at 10." OK fine, I was a waiter, I get that you don't want to wait for me all night. We asked for recommendations from the menu and he hurriedly pointed at a couple of things. "OK, we'll get those?" The food was mediocre - nothing to write home about. But at least it was overpriced. Look, I get that if you're visiting from Western Europe, the US, etc. the price will seem cheap, but I promise you can get the same dumpy, unimaginative food at many other places in the city, and at a half or less the price. Maybe we ordered the wrong things (again, these were his recommendations) but we were thoroughly unimpressed. OH, and the bread. He put out bread with our meal, and I had one single piece (of six on the plate). When we got our meal we'd both been charged 5HRK for bread. Seemed excessive.

This restaurant was recommended to me by a few people to try traditional cuisine. I get the feeling it has just become a tourist spot, right down to the big center table being held by a loud and drunk American bachelor party. Stuffy dining room - note by that I do not mean charming or classic, just old. I ordered one of the must-try dishes - Mlinci with Roast Duck. Everything from the wine to the bread to the main dish just seemed sort of pulled out from a container somewhere and thrown onto a dish to serve. The entree was not even warm. I imagine there are better places for traditional cuisine in a city which actually has a good dining scene.

  • May 30, 2017 by evaj0hn

The restaurant offers traditional cuisine but is a bit dated. The food is ok, nothing exceptional about it. It is centrally located and the prices are relatively reasonable.

  • May 24, 2017 by robin082

We had a very pleasant dinner at Stari Fijaker 900. The room is decorated with traditional table clothes and very comfortable chairs. The menu was a bit confusing at first, but we ultimately settled on some dishes with the help of the waiter. First, my wife was starved for salad and got a very good small mixed green salad. I had medallions of veal with a rich mushroom sauce along with a side order of mixed vegetables. It was very good. The waiter confirmed my wife’s choice of a Rinder goulash of beef, slices of beef cooked in a rich, spicy sauce with dumplings. Delicious! A half liter of decent house cabernet was plenty. The bill was shockingly inexpensive -- 220kn. ($32,50).

  • May 20, 2017 by MarkoPernic

The inside of the restaurant will get you the feeling of the Zagreb as it was 100 years ago. The waiters are on their way to be professional. The food is average. If youre looking for something traditional, check the meal "Purica s mlincima".

We stopped in for some Croatian food. What a let down! The service was cold. The lamb soup was lacking substance and flavor. A side salad was literally swimming in water. The Veal and vegetables turned out to be three small slices of boiled veal, a small portion of boiled cabbage, soggy and over cooked carrots and two small, (I mean tiny small) boiled potatoes. Some overlooked cauliflower was on the plate, too. So, if this Croatian food....I'll pass. You should, too.

  • May 03, 2017 by JudeTA88

We were a group of friends for lunch, ordered rissoto and goulash. The service was a little bit off, ambience low key, with old furniture - on the other hand, the courses were good and were satisfied overall. Would go back for lunch, just ok.

Locale caratteristico nel centro di Zagabria. Tavole ben apparecchiate e cordialità nell'accoglienza. Abbiamo ordinato degli gnocchi, veramente buoni. Quindi carne in vari modi e patate.

We had a really good meal in restaurant Stari Fijaker in Zagreb. The portions are huge and prices are fair. The menu consist mostly of genuine Croatian continental food. As Croatian I can only say that their sarma, buncek and blood sausage taste as if made at home with love for cooking. If you like to try local food, I recommend this place!

I was adviced by a local about this restaurant, because I wanted to eat something with local flavor and I did!! I ordered a cobanac, it was absolutely delicious!, local beer and fresh bread with butter (95 Kunas). At the restaurant there was another tourist besides me and the rest were locals, which gave me definitely a good indication that this was a good place for Croatian food.

I got here by chance, as all of the restaurants I had on my list were fully booked (it was Saturday afternoon). I got a recommendation from one of the locals and I didn't regreat as I was starving. The interior is dark but but cozy. It felt like oneof these 'old school' restaurants. This is not the fanciest restaurant in Zagreb but it was a great sign to see that locals dine here regularly. I had a great meal and super service here. You can tell everything is homemade. The beafsteak I had was one of the best in my life. I loved home made bread and traditional Croatian pancakes. The portions are king size! Highly recommended

If you drop in around 7 p.m. you'll probably be able to get a table, but later it's a bit more crowded so you might consider making a reservation. The restaurant serves traditional Croatian dishes: nothing fancy but fresh and tasty. Last time we visited was on Saturday evening and the place was full of Argentinian tennis fans who were in Zagreb for the Davis Cup Finals. However, we didn't wait long for our food and were really satisfied with good service and fine food.

We were directed to this establishment by our hotelier, and, never ate anywhere else during our 4 days stay in Zagreb! If you "hit on a winner"....why stray? Our waiter was so cordial and attentive, whilst staying "low key". Quiet setting with traditional fittings to room. Filled all our "visions" of "old European eatery". Did I say the food was great?!

I have visited this well known restaurant with my family. The stuff is very kind and friendly, and the interior is very nice. This is an old restaurant with food typical for Zagreb (and surrounding) situated in Mesnička (under street level), in the city center, on the way to Upper Town. We had to wait 20 minutes for a free table because it was very crowded. The room, table and walls were very nice, like in some castle. There are nice painting on the wall. We ordered some typical meals from the menu. Unfortunately, I have to admit that I was disappointed. The taste was average, or below average. The meat, side dish and salad were simply not so good as I expected for the price I paid. I expected something special for such an old and famous restaurant and I got food prepared by some amateur. The price I paid was expected (I knew where I am going) but for the same amount I eat better and more tasteful elsewhere. I want come here again because I was not satisfied with the overall taste and complexity of the prepared meals we tried (four of us).

This restaurant was recommended and I think it does not disappoint. While it can't be considered as fine dining, I suppose it stays true to it's aim to provide good local food. The portions can be quite filling as I had the cheese strudel, which was enough as a meal, not to mention the homemade sausages which came afterwards. The laughter of local families enjoying themselves confirmed the popularity of the place. Include Stari Fijaker in your walk to the western part of central Zagreb!

I did enjoy meal here - veal with homemade gnocchi. Plus slivovica. It was tasty and hot. I did feel very welcome. Staff was very friendly. Highly recommended.

We ordered the grilled chicken and boiled lamb. The price of both dishes was relatively cheap (around 55-65 Kuna per dish). The meat was well prepared but the flavor was rather rather plain. The chicken was served with just fried potatoes without any sauce (and again no salt or pepper added for flavoring). The lamb was served with boiled potatoes and boiled vegetables. Again no seasoning added. The cold 0.5L Pan beer was refreshing, though. All in all good value for money but don't expect to find high quality food.

Stari fijaker is sort of a cult place, where you can enjoy the old fashioned style of the restaurant with many authentic dishes on the menu. The place (and the toilets) are nice and clean, the furniture and tablecloths look new, the waiters are professional... but there are things I was not happy about. We have ordered "village lunch" and duck with mlinci. The first dish was, I am told, very good, large portion of tasty meat and vegetables. My duck with mlinci was unfortunately below average; too greasy and without the right taste. The other big question is the matter of bread. We got a selection of very nice looking rolls and bread; the one we tasted was really good. It was put on the table when we set, without explanation. But - and here is the thing I can't understand - this bun appeared in the bill. So I keep wondering why would a restaurant bother to count how many pieces of bread were eaten to put it on the bill, instead of calling it couvert and making it much more elegant.

My first visit and they definitely bought me. Firstly, the service is of the highest possible standard, you don't see that very often any more. Professional, yet friendly, absolutely superb. The menu shows a wide range of traditional Croatian dishes so it was very difficult to choose. The waiter happily recommended a few options which we were all very happy with. My pašticada with home-made gnocchi was absolutely fantastic. Will definitely come back.

Ottima trattoria in centro a Zagabria.

Pane buonissimo fatto in casa e birra media.

  • Aug 20, 2016 by Gabriel D

In the center of Zagreb, this restaurant offers a traditional Croatian regional menu. Reservations are not necessary but helpful. English menu is available. Try the breads and the pastries which are homemade.

I prezzi molto contenuti!!! Vale la pena provare!

Honestly, Stari Fijaker was not the fanciest restaurant I've been to, but it does have that atmosphere I could not find in North American restaurants for 25 years. For full disclosure - I am likely biased because I used to come here over 25 years ago as a university student - memories of hearty traditional Croatian food brought me this time back with my (almost adult) sons and wife. Location - a short walk from the main square, worm and welcoming atmosphere, clean and quit. Service - attentive, polite, knowledgeable about their restaurant and food - overall superb. Food - hearty traditional Croatian food that would my family have at home, even now, like wine stew, staffed peppers etc. Liked it very much so in our one week visit we went there for dinner and for lunch...

Starter was the most expensive item we ordered and it was very average. Sliced spicy sausage with a bit of plastic from the wrapper it presumably came in. Main was very nice, I had a venison stew and it was amazing, if my starter had been as good this would be a far more enthusiastic review. Overall an okay place to eat but I sadly can't sing it's praises

Had a spectacular meal and fantastic service here. You can tell everything is homemade and it's a good sign when locals dine here regularly, some even daily. They were happy to accommodate my aunt who is a vegan. All the food was just like my Baka made when I was younger and brought back so many memories. Cherry strudel for dessert was divine. Will certainly go back if we return to Zagreb.

Just five minutes from Jelačića Square you will find this restaurant packed with predominantly senior locals, which is a sure sign that food is good. Just ask the waiters what is a menu of the day an go for it - from clear veal soup, trough some cooked meat, or a steak in prosciutto asparagus sauce, to the desert. Don't forget to try local brandies. If you are vegetarian, maybe this resto is not the best idea for you.

Great experience. Traditional Croatian cooking of high quality. Excellent waiter with perfect English and good knowledge of wine list - his wine suggestion was spot-on, a very good Slovenian white. The restaurant also does not give the impression of a tourist trap. Very tasty food at reasonable prices.

After finishing a private tour, our tour guide Iva suggested that we come to this restaurant to sample fine Croatian cuisine and we were not disappointed. We asked the waiter to bring us food that Croatians would eat at home and he chose two superb dishes. We were impressed with the level of service despite the restaurant being very busy. If you don't reserve a table (you can online through their website) I'd suggest going there just after 6pm or you may miss out. We had a three course meal with drinks for around €50 (including tip). We would definitely recommend this restaurant.

I saw that it had 50:50 reviews and decided to give it a try but wish I hadn't. It's a nice looking restaurant but the food is lumpy, fatty and the service is dour. The only saving grace is it's cheap. Don't go here, go to Bistro Fotica instead.

  • Apr 26, 2016 by Rafiq J

I was skeptical about eating food from Slovenia and Croatia because I thought it be like German food with cabbage and sausages, but I was so wrong. The food there is amazing and filling and with flavor.

I really enjoyed eating here. I read it was a tourist trap and to be honest I didn't experience it as such. We had a very nice dinner with some local wine and Croatian dishes. I ate the Dalmatian style stew and we also had some home made sausages and soup. Based on the location, quality and friendliness of the staff I would highly recommend having a meal here. Let me warn you, portions are big!!

During our 4-day trip to Zagreb we decided to follow the assessment of TripAdvisor and chose the Stari Fiaker 900 for a dinner (Top 30 destination). We arrived around 2000 hrs and the restaurant was nearly empty despite some other tourists and a small group of locals. The service was provided by an elder waiter. We tried to order in croatian language but we didn't gained any smile or credit. We ordered a small starter (baked cheese) and as main dishes the famous Zagreb Schnitzel (Cordon Bleu) and calf. The taste was average as well as the presentation. We must admit that the red house wine was definitely the best domestic product on the table. A final try to receive some appreciation by ordering a liquor in croatian failed again. Neither smile, nor any emotional reaction. We left with only a very small tip and likely will not come back. It seems to me that this "traditional" restaurant focuses nowadays just on tourists who might visit the spot for a single meal. Taste and service were beyond expectations.

Entered the restaurant. An amazing local group was singing. Then we ordered dinner. This is local cuisine, just amazing. Something my father wouldn have made. It is homemade local, not modern but absolutely delicious. Fresh, hand made with awesome flavores, very, very reasonable in price. A lovely house wine and desert dinner for 2. Cost US $38.00. I would have paid 5 times for it was wonderful. GO

We went to this restaurant for a late lunch on a Sunday. It was packed with locals (clearly popular), and when we first arrived, the staff seemed momentarily taken aback that we didn't have a reservation (or just that we weren't locals - not sure which). But they did seat us, and we had a very good meal with a bit of local atmosphere. I recommend the game meats with gnocchi. Also we were looking for a vegetarian selection, and they made a surprisingly good vegetable "steaks" (patties). Prices were quite reasonable - a good value (at least compared to the coastal towns where we had been eating).

Business dinner, for 12, in March 2016. Table booked ahead as place gets busy. Waiters helpful, we had Croatian speakers in the group but waiters had good enough English. Wide range of typical Croatian dishes, indeed it was a Croat who recommended the place. Very patient as we asked about dishes and ordered different ones. Everyone happy with their choice. Portions are large! Wine and beer list was good, again Croatian wines which are good. Desserts more limited; my strudel was big enough for two. And were perfectly happy to give separate bills as many required them!. Recommended

We were at Stari Fijaker in Feb. 2016. The ambiance and decoration is excellent. It is located in the center of the city, not too far from Zagreb's funicular and the main street. There were four of us, and we tried three different plates: 2 took the 'croatian Steak' which is a veal scallopini with ham and cheese that is rolled and fried, someone took trout which was served on plate brought on a hot stone and I took a typical Croatian stew. I could not help taste a bit of every dish and liked each one of them. Unfortunately, we didn't have appetizers of desserts. I would recommend this place for the atmosphere, food quality and taste and also for the service. See pictures

I honestly cannot understand how this restaurant has received such great reviews; my Saturday evening experience here was awful. They say first impressions count, and immediately upon entry the waiter who ‘greeted’ me said not two words, refused to smile and merely pointed to an available table. Fair enough I thought, but for the rest of my visit he appeared miserable as sin and even resorted to sitting by the entrance to the kitchen on a number of occasions (presumably to rest his feet?) yet proceeded to pick his nose while in view of diners. Fortunately the other members of staff weren’t quite so bad, but they still lacked any real passion or customer focus. Don’t expect to have any of your drinks refilled here and asking any questions around the menu is difficult. The menu itself is large and varied, although takes a little while to understand since it’s not the most logical and doesn’t properly explain what items and sides are included with each dish. I settled on the spicy Slovenian sausage to start which was a sizeable plate of thickly sliced chorizo style meat, and although not spicy itself came with two small whole red chillies. Make sure you do request a bowl of bread to go with it though, as without I can imagine it would be rather plain. The veal Zagreb style was my choice for main, along with a side order of vegetables. The waiter confirmed whether I’d like these boiled or grilled but alas they never arrived, instead a plate of chips. The portion of breaded meat appeared large but on cutting into it the plate filled with water and this continued throughout eating it. Quite what proportion of the veal was actually meat was debatable, and the quantity of ham and cheese inside was also lacking. The chips ended up being ok, and had a good home made taste to them and the side salad, although exactly the same as that provided with the starter was alright. To give them the benefit of doubt I went ahead to request a desert. No menu to look through, just the ‘grumpy’ waiter reciting the three choice available. The cherry strudel sounded good I thought, but in hindsight I’d only recommend it if you enjoy eating rubber. Indeed I actually wasn’t able to finish it. The interior of the restaurant is decorated nicely, and has a local vibe but unfortunately this was no where near enough to recover what was my worst meal in Zagreb. Even the candle on the table remained unlit for the entire visit and little touches like that left me thinking that the staff just couldn’t wait to finish for the day. Plenty of better alternatives very close by!

Firstly we had 3 different types of bread (one with čvarci) with spiced curd. We choose already prepared meals that they serve fresh on daily basis like venison dishes with njoki and green peas with smoked pork, and was great! Portions were big. Rustic ambient and great service also contributed to the great atmosphere.

The food was definitely over average and the main courses were medium-sized. The waiters were very friendly and the interior was old school. I would give them a 3,5 if l could. The only minus was that the grilled vegetables sustained of just eggplant slices and a small slice of tomato. We ordered a bottle of wite wine, but didn't receive a wine cooler. Overall a nice dining experience.

A nice restaurant with good atmosphere in a rustic environment. The food was very tasty and quite large portions. Good for meat lovers, but still have some other options on the menu. We came in a good time, so we got our food really quick. Loved the three different kind of bread that we could snack on before dinner, we were really hungry so that was a good start! In all a good visit!

I can say all the best for this restaurant it was not my first visit but i always feel welcome. Great food, friendly service, great value for money. Do not bother with menu, just ask waiter for recommendation. I hardly wait to come back

The best friendly service and extraordinarily good traditional food. A must go if you visit Zagreb. Been here a coupple of times already and was never disapointed. Their food is just like grandma would make it fresh daily. The service staff is there for ages already so very friendly and polite, ready to exceed your expectations. So far I have to say My favorite.

If you want to try the most delicious traditional Zagreb's food, visit this place in the centre of Zagreb. Great offer of various domestic, homegrown, natural meat products such as Sarma or Buncek or great hunter stew, but as well they always have some fish on menu. Owner is always present in restaurant and he and stuff will recommend you choices of the day. Desserts are must. Combine your meal with house wine(gemist mix)

This place was recommended by the apartment we were staying in. Very decent indeed - very tasty local food, friendly service, and good value. No pretentions - it is what it is, and that's why we liked it.

I wanted a meal with local cuisine, and the receptionist suggested this place. The meal was hearty and tasty. The prices were very reasonable as well. My only complaint is that service was rather slow, even for Europe.

Prezzi molto convenienti.

I had some guests from USA in Zagreb so I wanted them to try some local traditional food. Remembered this old restaurant in the center of Zagreb and wanted to try it after long time. First, I was able to reserve online normally and the table was waiting for us on time. There were some nice old dishes on the menu so we tried few of them to give my guest a picture of the local food. The duck with "mlinci" was very tasty and mix of the food was also nice and had some important dishes like sausages, sour cabbage and "sarma". All in all it was a nice, not expencive local lunch. Would recommend it to someone interested in local recipes.

The restaurant is situated on Mesnička street, just a few steps from Ilica. It has a long tradition and it is known to have good, freshly prepared food in a traditional way. The ambience is cosy and warm, the food is excellent and the portions are very generous. The service is friendly and efficient and the price is moderate.

I ate a nice kind of beef in Stari Fijaker and it was delicious :) The pirces are normal for that quality restaurant. You must give a try :)

  • Oct 09, 2015 by Blythe M

I had trout and homemade gnocchi with grilled vegetables. The other friends had a beef stew. We came to this restaurant 5 years ago and loved it. If anything, the menu continues to astound me. The food is fantastic. When you look at this picture notice the little Hackney's on the wall. That is the English name for Fijaker . Don't miss this little piece of authenticity when you're in Zagreb.

Great food based on traditional croatian cuisine from all regions but mostly continental. Although heavily based on meat and fish, vegetarians will find something for themselves too. Kids friendly with high chairs and almost all dishes can be ordered as half portion for the little ones. 6 of us have had 2 or 3 course lunch with drinks. So here it is... Servings are big, soups, stews and goulash come in a large pots that will fill 2-3 full plate helpings. lt is hard to choose between excellent dishes, so you may ask for daily specials. Bread is served with some delicous buns and "Klipići" which can serve as starters especially if you take Zagreb traditional starter "Sir i vrhnje" which is cottage cheese and special sour cream mix seasoned with sweet ground paprika. It will open your apetite for sure. Just use it as carppacio or spread on bread or Klipić Do not miss in-house pickled veggies as a salad or season specials like stuffed paprika/ capsicum (2 huge paprikas with mashed potatoes and tomato sauce) during summer or during winter excellent Sarma (stuffed sour cabbage leaves. We had it once before). Steaks are big and served with side dish (usually to choose from). We ordered Manduševac veal steak stuffed with mushrooms and ham. It was big, covered in excellent gravy with rustic potato. Actually it was so big almost half went to doggy bag for dinner :) Venison stew came on the plate served with gnocchi but servings was more than enough for one person. It was maybe a bit on a salty side but regarding meat it was delicious. "Lička kalja" is another dish we tried and it is cooked lamb with chunks of different veggies. Tasty and on a lighter side of the menu. Also served in a big pot. Shephard's stew "Čobanac" was great and although traditionally prepared version tends to be overly spicy and hot you will find very mild version here. If you like it hot just ask for ground chilly and add to taste. Actually it is so mild that 7 y.o. enjoy it very much. Stuffed paprika (2 pcs. In the plate with tomato sauce and mashed potato) was really nice and I may say one of the best I have had. Big serving for realy hungry. Kids will have more than enough with just half portion. Grilled liver were nice and there was plenty on the plate. If you are into liver, take it, but do not be dissapointed if they do not have it as they prepare them only fresh and in smaller quantities. We finished with excellent in-house made desserts of Strudels (sweet) and obligatory "Strukli" (special doe with cottage cheese with sour cream- salty variant of dessert. If you have time ask for baked version). We missed usually excellent strudel with plums, but were very satisfied with sour cherry one. Beer and wine selection is good and you can ask for recommendation. Aperitives selection is good and range from Rakija varieties to mild cherry or Medica (honey schnapps) Kids can get standard bottled juices or some fizzy drinks. Staff is very friendly and helpfull with sense for the customer. If you are looking for good meal with decent prices, be it solo, with family, friends or business partners ( there are three sections of which one is a bit more secluded) you will not regret it. Number one place in Zagreb to try local cuisine and have great time enjoying it. Highly recommended.

This restaurant was close to our hotel. The food was excellent - large quantity for about ½ the price as in Dubrovnik! But they did not have our first choice dishes (duck, octopus stew). So we had the Pleasant’s Lunch (four kinds of pork and fried potatoes) and the beef stew. The setting was quite rustic and classic.

We arrived late in Zagreb and chose Stari Fijaker 900 as our dining option as there appeared to be very little choice. If you are looking for a rustic, step back in time kinda place then this is it!!! We had very little to choose from the menu as it was 10pm and the kitchen was semi closed. Our entree of stuffed peppers were tasty. The mains of Pork three ways was also good. The servings are large with lots of potatoes, both fried and boiled. House wine complimented the meals. Service friendly and attentive. If you are VERY hungry and in need of some hearty Croatian food with lots of meat options then this is the place for you.

We got the suggestion to eat here when we were on our bike tour. We wanted to eat where the locals go, so we were sent here. The restaurant has a old European feel; very warm and inviting. We were very pleased to see that other than another table which was on the tour with us, everyone else were locals. The staff was very kind and helpful with the menu by asking what you like or don't like and making a suggestions. We had the stew and a fish dish which were both excellent. The spread for the bread they brought out when we asked for butter was a smoked fish spread which was just delicious. Can't go wrong eating good, hearty, local food here.

An ethno-style restaurant in the cetre of the old town of Zagreb where one can try local specialities like "struklje". I tried this time "Zagrebacki odrezan" and I can warmly recommend that. It is a breaded and fried cordon bleu. Delicious!

Me and my friend found this place almost by chance. And I'm glad we did. I think our waiter might be the owner, but not sure. He was very profesional at giving advice on the food. We tried Dalmatian prosciutto for a starter, the portion was huge. Main course was I think farmers plate (mix of Croatian food), good thing we were hungry cause it's too much for a normal person :). The price was more than fair for the portions and attention we got from the staff. Defenetly worth to visit.

We had lunch beef tripe (price: 6 €) and venison stew - basic brown souce (price: 9.3 €) and two smaller pieces of grilled pork loins (price: 12€). Final bill was higher than we expected. The main dishes were good, standard quality.Service was common and staff was just doing their job ... so nothing special!

We had a large group and decided on the potato & mushroom soup which was fantastic. Waiter suggested platters of pork, beef & duck which was also excellent. A formal, yet unpretentious atmosphere with very professional waiters who accomodate their guests very well. A little pricier than other places in Zagreb, but a very nice meal that was worth the extra cost.

Stopped here for lunch on recommendation of a local. Super friendly waitstaff and I was surprised how quickly the meal came to our table. Very tasty and reasonably priced. Had some wine and beer, with an salad and mains. Try the shepherd stew and grilled calamari. Not my favorite meal in Croatia, but it seems solid and would definitely return. The lunch crowd seemed to be mostly older locals, and this is likely a good sign. Fun ambiance, the local would be good for a range of activities such as a family meal, a casual date, or a business lunch.

I was passing Zagreb, and wanted to go somewhere near the city center and also wanted to park close to the restaurant. After a quick chat with policewoman (very friendly) she said there is a restaurant just a few meters ahead and a parking garage that is also close by. Parking garage was easy to find and it was just 200m away from Fijaker. I wanted to eat a steak so after a few delightful house pastries I ordered a beefsteak-medium. Om nom nom delicious. Glass of wine to top it of and it was really nice. Really friendly staff and prices are really reasonable. OH, and I suggest after the lunch you take a quick stroll to city center!

I have been traveling around Croatia and Slovenia. This was the most expensive and least pleasant meal of all. Confusing and unclear menu, no allergenic highlights, wifi just didn't work at all, no beer variety, food way bellow expected by restaurant's looks and the price was shocking: for much less than that I had a superior meal in a restaurant by the seaside with a bottle of wine and delicious dessert (here I just got a bellow average beef and potatoes dish with what should be a cheap beer). Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

I ate at Stari fijaker several times, because it is a great choice if you want to have a tasteful meal served very fast. I love their 'sarma' and baked duck with 'mlinci', as it reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen. The location is nicely and authentically decorated, and all the staff is really kind, helpful and experienced. Don't miss the cherry strudel!

A little bit on too much “old and traditional”, one more level of modern would not hurt it. It has heavy and traditional food, so this place is more for people who like to “eat more”, taste is old and heavy mostly.

There was nothing wrong with Stari Fijaker, but we just didn't have a very memorable meal. The grilled mushrooms appetizer was good, but was just a plate of mushrooms drowning in butter. My 'Beef Stew Dalmatia Style' wasn't really stew, just some beef with gravy on a plate with gnocchi on the side. I figured a stew would at least have a carrot or something in it, but maybe that's just the fault of the menu for not describing it well enough. The waiter did recommend it, but there wasn't anything special about the dish. My wife's vegetarian 'hamburgers' were actually better, but were served dry and really could have used a sauce or garnish of some kind. We shared an apple strudel for dessert which was enjoyable, I can't imagine it wouldn't be anywhere. I think a problem, at least for tourists, is the sheer size of the menu. It's pretty hard to figure out. Service was fine and the atmosphere ok, I was kind of baffled as to why there would be a big electronics charging station in the middle of the restaurant. Overall I really don't have anything to complain about, but we thought the Croatian cuisine experience at Stari Fijaker was a bit lacking.

We went here looking for authentic Croatian cuisine and while the dishes offered on the menu are authentic, we felt like each dish was so heavily salted that it was hard to notice any other flavor. The exception was the strukli; it was very good!

Variety of local dishes prepared in original home made way. Everything we eat - from bread, pastries, meat and dessert was fresh and home made, like at "grandma's house". Recommended: venison stew with home made gnocchi. Extremelly good value for money.

Had dinner there yesterday with my wife. She's from Croatia but never lived there. All the dinner she was having those "madeleine de proust" moments while eating her sarma! Food was very tasty and also it's not a rip off. 2 beers and 2 enormous dishes for 150kn only. Very friendly staff, with very good advices, recommended us what to taste. The place is spotless with an old school touch, very authentic. Will return before we leave. Great place.

Another great local restaurant found in the heart of Zagreb. If you're looking for some nice local dishes for a decant price than this is a great option. Service was excellent and as we sat down we were welcomed and received local cheese with garlic and ham and freshly baked bread. The meat was very good, we had an excellent Zagreb schnitzel and Slavonic stew. In the fish department they didn't have too much due to it being off- season.. Desert can be skipped as it wasn't the best. The wine was good and we had a really nice experience here.

Place had a warm decor and the food was good-value. Menu selection was huge (which is a bad sign sometimes) but the food tasted fresh and seemed like local home-cooking. Pretty cheap as well, probably less than 200 kunas for two people.

We only stayed in Zagreb one night due to the weather, but had we stayed longer we would have come back. There were so many appetizing options on the menu we had to ask for help from the delightfully gruff waiter. He pointed us towards the Pasticada (?) and the Venison stew, and he was bang on. The stew was served to me in a terrine, and was enough for about 4-5 bowls full of stew. The first mouthful was one of the most flavourful, and succulent meals I have ever tasted. My girlfriends Pasticada was also so good that she was happy to leave me to my stew (a rare please). All up we had 1 starter (Dalmatian Ham and Olives), two mains, and two carafes of wine, and had a bill of 300kn. Amazing value.

Our waiter made recommendations for the appetizer which was a meat platter. For our main we had the combination of meats stew which was very tasty. We enjoyed a recommended bottle of wine. Service was very good.

It looks like an old style restaurant but worth eating there - had a lot of dishes but the friendly waiter pointed out the most traditional ones, food very tasty and in large portion - good place to go for dinner if you only have one night in zagreb

We asked the hotel staff for suggestions of where to get authentic regional food. So we went to Stari Fjaker and were immensely pleased with our meal. We began with Zagorski Strukli, cottage cheese in a warm, light dough -- excellent! For our entree, both of us ordered the Slavonian Cobanac, a stew with four different types of meat and gnocchi. The dish was incredibly flavorful, filling, and delicious! The entire meal for two, including a half-liter of local wine, bread, tea, and water was about $40 US. Don't miss this great restaurant in Zagreb.

Restaurant had re-opened when we visited at the beginning of September. Lots of character and very helpful staff. The cooked ham starter was possibly his favourite and I liked the hearty venison stew. Good wine as well. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Just FYI, this restaurant is closed until the middle of August 2014 because the street is under repair and there is no gas line. (The 5 star review is just because I didn't want to hurt the rating of this restaurant simply for being closed.)

Stari Fijaker is one of my favorite restaurants because it truly celebrates the old-fashioned Croatian culture through interior design and it´s incredible food. The staff represent themselves in a very professional and kind manner which helps you feel at home (which shows true, Croatian hospitality). Stari Fijaker has a great variety on the menu, all that have some connection to Croatian culture, which really helps guests at the restaurant connect with Croatia and learn the story behind it´s charm =)

This restaurant is indeed great value for money! The portions are generous, the quality is good and my mother LOVES the bread here. In addition, the food here is truly Croatian! Although the service may not be top notch, the service staff are nice. Recommended indeed!

Had a lovely dinner here! Prices are very good, the quality of the food is great, their menu comes in different languages, and the decor is somewhat old-fashioned, but has a good vibe over it. Traditional local cuisine, Croatian wines, and a wide variety of choices on the menu. Definately to be recommended!

Great local food, went here on a Saturday afternoon as a group of four. We all ordered something different and nothing disappointed. The local sausages and sheppards stew, were probably the highlights. The house wine was also very good and reasonably priced. The wait staff was very quick and attentive.

This place is pretty huge so you are bound to find a place even in the "high peak" season when all the other places are packed - and it's pretty much in the city center so it's a good choice location wise as well. The menu, service and atmosphere are pretty old fashioned, but in a good way - if you want a taste of "authentic" Zagreb - this is the place to go. I recommend purica s mlincima, a traditional Croatian Christmas meal - roast turkey with a delicious pasta-like side dish, made of cooked unleavened dough seasoned with turkey drippings - they really make it the way it should be done. Unfortunately, the wine list is not much but you'll be able to find something OK for sure.

Ottimi i cevapcici fatti in casa.

Stari Fijaker 900 is the perfect place if you wanna experience Croatian food at its best. A very rich menu allows to choose from Slavonian sausage to Dalmatian Stew passing through a very wide selection of typical dishes. The environment takes you back in the years while the central location makes it a perfect choice if you don't wanna drive outside the country to experience ham made like food. A negative mark on the fact that at 21:00 of Sunday evening, several choices were not available, but this might also be seen as a prove the food is fresh.

I took some extended family from Slovenia to "what used to be the best old Zagreb restaurant". The food was very average and the serving was really disappointing, it seemed like the waiters can hardly wait to see us eat and leave as soon as possible. Among other things, we wanted to have "krpice sa zeljem" (Krautflecken, Pasta with cabbage), which is a really basic and plain old Zagreb (side)dish, and they looked at us like we were totally crazy to order that. The main dishes were good, standard quality, nothing special. I am sure we will not visit again soon.

I enjoyed venison stew, tender and with a tasty gravy and gnocci. My wife found her shepherd's stew delicious. Portions were ample. The bread basket had fresh tasty bread rolls, including one type which we have not tasted before. The red house wine was of good table wine standard, reasonably priced; and can be purchased as a half litre carafe. The restaurant had a cosy homely atmosphere with arches and interesting decorations. Superb value for money.

This is a charming restaurant in one of the oldest streets in Zagreb which offers traditional Croatian cuisine. Regardless of being marketed in all brochures, this restaurant is not one of the best choices in Zagreb downtown. The food is ok, but not even close to what it used to be like before. The preparation and presentation are inconsistent, and the food is not always completely fresh. Hope they will improve both cooking and presentation. In addition, they don't have a terrace, but they do have a smoking room which is actually connected to the main restaurant room, which can be unpleasant if there are many people smoking at the same time. Hope they will improve this (read: ban smoking!) as well.

We've had a very nice meal here. It is a very nice traditional restaurant. The food was very good as well as the service. We've had 2 different appetizers and 2 main courses and all of them were very tasty, well cooked and well presented. The prices were fair. I strongly recommend this place for tourists.

I was born in Zagreb and I have lived here all my life. I work near this restaurant. When I am tired of sandwiches and restaurant food, and want to eat something my mother would cook, I go to Stari fijaker. Beside it's excellent food and warm staff, it is very affordable. It's good for travellers on budget also. For a great price you can get a nice meal, as we like to say it - "something with a spoon" - which would be a good break from budget meals and sandwiches. But with it's authentic Croatian cuisine, great local atmosphere and warm staff it's a great place for anyone visiting Zagreb who wants to feel real Croatian restaurant.

Recommended by our local hotel staff, this was a true little authentic gem! We had lunch and just asked the waiter to suggest two dishes, which we ordered both and absolutely enjoyed. One was the shepards stew (authentic style) the other was a beef dish with homemade gnocchi and the bubbles we had actually really complimented the rich dishes. Not hungry for dinner yet!

  • Jul 08, 2013 by MadtownChris

I really wanted to rate this restaurant higher but there were two probably transient problems that we experienced. First, there was a group of locals in a separate room smoking like chimneys. While that adds to the old school ambiance, the main dining area was sort of unpleasant due to the cigarette smoke. Second, my daughter found a metal rivet in her spaghetti. To their credit they did not charge us for the spaghetti and the food was otherwise delicious. The place looks and feels like it's been a local destination for 100 years. I'd recommend you try it despite our experience.

The restaurant was recommended locally and I did not regret the choice for lunch on a Friday. I was astonished by the number of locals (working hours?). Choice was excellent, wide, typical Croatian fare. I choose "Brodet " and strudel, was very satisfied, also cost/ benefit. Atmosphere local, good, service friendly.

We stayed in Zagreb for 4 days, so I can compare, this one was the best restaurant where we have been eating, cosy place with traditional furnishings. The service was compliant, we didn´t wait too long. Meal was teasty and in enough amount. The price was higher but it was worth the experience. Peter

My boyfriend and I are in Zagreb for a few days and wanted to give traditional Croatian food a try. We read reviews on Trip Advisor and decided to go here. I had a noodle soup to start and Lee had vegetable soup. Both were very tasty and we got mountains of fresh bread. The peppered bread was by far the best. I had the hand dried pork for mains which was served with potatoes and beans. The pork was amazing and crammed full of flavour. Lee had chicken in gongonzola sauce which was also incredible. The flavours in each dish were outstanding. We had 2 starters and 2 mains along with a soft drink each and the bill came to just over 170kuna which was brilliant. The portions were huge and we were very full by the end. I really enjoyed our meal here and would definitely go back should I return to the city.

We had a wonderful lunch and a fabulous dinner at this restaurant! The flavors of the food were just amazing. Especially the tomato soup and the spread made with cream cheese and onions! The location is great and easy to find, the service is great, and if you're looking for Croatian food, this is a great place to try! The only downside is the smoking. They have a separate room, but you can still smell smoke. Tables by the front door are much better if that is something that bothers you.

My journalists hosts took me to Stari Fijaker on my first night in Zagreb to taste "traditional Croatian food". It was great and just kept coming. A large salad, followed by a large bowl of soup, then a massive platter of grilled meats on a bed of vegetables, pancake and potatoes washed down with local Croatian wine. Wonderful. The staff were really friendly, the service fast, the food fresh and tasty and the whole experience was one to remember. Would go there again.

We were there on Valentines day, atmosphere was nice, light music, i got present- litlle chocolate. The food was delicious! First we ate tomato soup and soup of beef, you can feel real old domestic taste in it. Zagrebački steak was soft and so easy to chew and potatoes were great! And desert was so good, feel like heaven. They have good choice of wine. Price is ok, not expensive, we paid 50 euros for our full dinner with wine. Ill be back again absolutley!

It's quite a large restaurant that looks like it might once have been stables. The service was pleasant and our waiter spoke good English, which was a bonus. My Zagreb pork escalope was very tasty while my wife's Slavonian Shepherd's stew was excellent. The waiter introduced us to palačinka chateau which were pancakes with a wine and cream sauce - very nice.

I really enjoyed this place. It was my first time eating "real" Croatian food and I thought the food was great. The service was fine, nothing special and the ambiance cozy.

Typical autoctonous Zagreb restaurant serving traditional croatian dishes. Excellent sausages with sauer craut and restani krumpir (Croatian style potatoes).

  • Nov 07, 2012 by c4rine

C'etait bon, rien d'extraordinaire, cuisine maison.

  • Nov 05, 2012 by Mlinka

Too expensive food for the money, mostly artificially food without domestic taste. Not tasty. Even not local food. Just typical food for cheep restaurants in Zagreb.

Stari Fijaker is definitely overrated. The decor is still as I remember it from my youth. A little makeover would not go amiss. The service was friendly, and the food arrived at our table fast. Perhaps even too fast. The food was not bad, but not great either. All was on the cold side, the soups were definitely tastier than some of the main courses. The desert was great. The table wine was not bad and all in all it was not a bad value for the money (around 200 Euro for a group of 8 who all had three course meals.) Would I go there again? I do not think so. At least not for a leisurely meal with the family. If I were a tourist and wanted fast food (to be fair to the place, it is NOT McDonalds, but the food is fast), I would give it a go. The location is convenient, a big let down is the fact that it does not have a terrace. Punter beware, this is not a fine dining place. And not an English pub, either, because the food is not hot. And not a beer cellar either, because they do not make their own beer. It is just your average place to it in Zagreb.

The great reviews this place has received absolutely boggle me, unless it has perhaps come under new management lately, or the menu has been radically revamped. When we visited last week (september 2012) we were greeted with a snort and raised eyebrows - should have trusted our instincts and left then. Alas, we listened to our stomachs and sat down anticipating a finely cooked Croatian meal. We were sorely disappointed. My boyfriend ordered what i can only describe as a deep fried stick stuffed with aneamic ham, and cheese. It was billed on the menu as stuffed veal, but there was no veal in sight. Both our meals were paired with greasy kebab shop chips. Waiters were miserable. 'beer hall' is a very flattering description, it was just a dark, soulless vault.

Great local food on a great location. Staff has always been so nice and friendly; you feel like you are at home. Cozy and warm atmosphere. I guess most of the food from the menu is my favourite- cabbage rolls, stuffed peppers, pancakes....Prices are very reasonable and I always come back there.

I first had no idea what Sarma was but I wanted to try it anyway as I had heard of "Sarma" several times while I was traveling East Europe. Now I know that Sarma = Rolled Cabbage ! I really want you to try if you have a chance to visit Stari Fijaker. It is served with mashed potato. It is super. To my surprise, it is just 50 kuna. Also a glass of wine costs 15 kuna. The restaurant itself looks very old, it is not definitely modern, sophisticated but when you sit in there, you will have a feeling that this restaurant and building have god a long history :-)

There were some locals in the restaurant when we were there and it was very difficult to get the attention of anyone to order the food. They were obviously center stage, The atmosphere in the restaurant was poor and the whole place lacked hositality. There were about 5 waiters pacing around and chatting, but no service. Wow! We felt very unwelcome there. Food was OK, but we will not be back. There are much happier and better places to eat in Zagreb. Go there instead. Just because this place is listed in all the guides - does not make it a good restaurant.

  • May 11, 2012 by VFTL

Typical Croatian hospitality and big portions of very tasty but heavy food

  • May 02, 2012 by FOSS63

Personale molto gentile. Menu anche in italiano.

This restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel. We abolutely loved it! Service was excellent and promt (we didnt have huge amounts of time as we were catching a bus to the Plitvice Lakes that afternoon - we told them that and they brought everything out without delays). Food was fresh and typical Croatian accompanied by an excellent Pinot Bijeli produced 30 km outside of Zagreb. Most tables around us seemed local, which is always a good sign. Stari Fijaker means 'old coach' - the whole place is decorated with old coaches hanging from the arched ceiling. Very beautiful and recommended.

  • Apr 23, 2012 by Zoran W

If you are a tourist this is the place where you can genuine Croatian cuisine. Service and interior will remind you on socialists times, but this is more of a plus than a minus, because you can't see that nowadays! :-)

  • Mar 29, 2012 by aventine

Fair warning: we did not eat there. The only thing that I wanted to point out is that we searched this out with our kids for lunch and then surprised to find that it had more formal, staid atmosphere. The menu was OK, but not that interesting when we looked at it. It was a bit dark on the inside. We ended up eating at another restaurant. Definitely not a beer hall.

  • Mar 11, 2012 by Akypa

This is the equivalent of an English pub Croatian style. Simple straightforward typical Croatian food. Great for a quick lunch in between walking about.

  • Mar 09, 2012 by Klaus S

Man spricht (teilweise) deutsch. Insgesamt durchaus zu empfehlen.

  • Mar 08, 2012 by Douglas C

Went there on a cold Tuesday night and had the slavonski čobanac which had been recommended in another review. It was very good and I almost finished the whole pot of stew. Whoever said that the portions were small must be a very big eater. Atmosphere and service were good but not great.

  • Feb 05, 2012 by Loukas M

Good value for money (less than £30 for two, with soups and mains, including a glass of house wine each). The soups were very nice (and massive!), with beef and homemade noodles. The mains had a definite home made feeling too! We had (very nicely cooked) game meat with (homemade) gnocchi and a pork with some traditional sauce from that region of Croatia (excellent sauce, ok pork). Did I use that "homemade" word too many times? Well, you should definitely try the place yourselves and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Additional merits: Very good house red wine, and nice complimentary selection of breads.

We chose this restaurant from the guide book at the Hotel Jaegerhorn. The description said it was a beer hall, but that is not the impression it gave us! There is a lot to choose from on the menu and the prices seemed reasonable. The patrons consisted of couples, families and business men/women, so it seems to appeal to a variety of people. Give it a try!

  • Jan 30, 2012 by Petra M

About this restaurant, I heard compliments and I and a friend decided to come to lunch. I was left disappointed, served soup was cold and the portions for the main course, too small

  • Jan 20, 2012 by Reisefreu...

  • Dec 24, 2011 by danielFlorence_Italy

beer hall ambience for this reliable, old fashioned and typical croatian restaurant for whom wants to taste local specialties, excellent goulash with dumplings, slavonski čobanac (a spicy 3 different meat stew), cheese štruklji, zagrebački odrezak (panfried rolled cutlet with ham and cheese filling), good desserts, wide beer choice and traditional digestive called bermet. place for croatian families, parties with friends, very few tourists (as luckily elsewhere in zagreb), traditional rustic decoration, white and red tablecloths, miniature horse carriages (fijaker) hanging from the ceiling, efficient and fast service, very large portions. not a place for cool-minimal-chic lovers but for people wishing to merge with locals and to appreciate good food

Local friends of us took us to this little gem in the Lower Town of Zagred, promising some regional specialities. The place itself does not look like much but the fact that it's always crowded is a hint and a half. Service was good considering it was very busy at 14.30 on a Saturday afternoon, the waiter even had a bit of time for a little joke and recommendations. The food turned out to be excellent home cooked dishes from the region and other Croation specialities. The Zagorska Soup was one of the best I have ever tasted and the Pasticada was full of flavour with the Gnocci home made rather than from a bag. Highly Recommended!

  • Oct 22, 2011 by Pgholson

Atmosphere is wonderful, especially cozy in cooler/cold weather. Service usually great, but is not consistent. Milinci with duck and turkey can be good or tasteless, not sure what determines that. Always ask the waiters what looks good in the kitchen-usually that is reliable.

  • Oct 16, 2011 by Moglica

Very tasty food, and there is plenty of it. Croatian traditional cooking, like turkey with "mlinci" - (Croatian traditional pasta tatters), various stews and minced meat dishes etc, but also international dishes. Wonderful are the little bread rolls with pork scratchings. We have been there many times, and will go again. The restaurant itself is also traditional , lots of wood, not posh but not sloppy as well. The service is always very friendly and nice. The price, especially for foreigners, is more then acceptable.

  • Aug 10, 2011 by brezovcan

If you like authentic zagorski specialties then this a place. Great food, great service, great ambiance, and great location. I had ribs cooked in bean stew with cabagge sallad and dark rye bread. For starters we had sunka i sir with ragmat sallad... wow it was awesome. Words can't describe as I was transformed to my childhood years.

  • Mar 19, 2011 by Storyshore

We discovered this little restaurant off the main area of Zagreb's central square. Not clearly visible until you are close by. Once inside this quaint venue has extremely helpful waiting staff as well and very good english conversation available to explain the local cuisine. I must say that the foods flavours were mind blowing and for two people having eaten all courses extremely cheap and amazing value for money. You must visit for a taste of local cuisine.
